Swedish Massage: The Swedish is the most widely-used form of massage therapists because of its relaxation effects. The massage therapist uses long, gliding strokes to ease tension and improve circulation.
Benefit: Swedish massage improves superficial circulation and eases stress and tension.
Try it if: you are new to massage or if you are seeking light to moderate pressure on your back and shoulders.
Deep Tissue Massage: Compared to the light and superficial strokes of Swedish Massage, deep tissue massage targets the deeper fascia and muscles of the body. Massage therapists utilize more intense kneading and pressure.
Benefits: Deep tissue massage helps chronic tension held in muscles of the body, improves circulation, stretches scar tissue and improves range of motion.
Try it if: you are suffering from some chronic muscle pain and tightness or if you desire more pressure than a Swedish massage.
Shiatsu Massage: Shiatsu massage is rooted in Chinese medicine and aims to release blockages that prevent energy, or ‘Qi’, from flowing healthily. The massage therapists employs techniques that may involve their elbows, knees , and even feet to provide pressure as they work out tension from the body.
Benefits: Shiatsu massage is known to improve circulation and aid in the release of oxytocin – a stress reducing neurotransmitter.
Try it if: You are curious about Eastern types of massage and/or you are looking to decompress and relax.
Reflexology: Reflexology is a form of massage for the feet. Also rooted in Eastern medicine, massage therapists apply pressure on certain reflexology points in the feet that are believed to correlate to body organs and systems.
Benefits: Reflexology is touted in Eastern medicine as being able to help correct imbalances in the body, …. and it also simultaneously relieves any nagging foot pain from wearing too-tight shoes all day!
Try it if: You want to try an alternative technique to alleviating blockages in the body … or if you have tired aching feet from being up all day.
Cranial Sacral Therapy: Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle massage that is targeted to the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. The goal is to release compression in the areas above and relieve tension and pain.
Benefits: Cranial Sacral therapy can relieve pain from headaches, neck and back pain. It can help with migraines and improve sleep as well.
Try it if: You have neck or head tension or any low back tightness.
